Bratanov, Bulgaria

BRATANOV Winery is a typical family project - the dream of one father and his two sons to restore the hereditary wine-growing tradition after a 50-year hiatus. In 2015, the oenologist Maria Stoeva, who joined in Dijon, France, joined them.

The 44 hectares of own vineyards were planted in the period 2006 - 2018 with the classic noble varieties of Merlot, Cheese, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Vioonia, as well as local mavrud, ruby, gum and incense. The terrains are located on the sunny hills of the mystical Sakar Mountain near Shishmanovo village, Harmanli, Southeast Bulgaria. The nearby Maritza River and the flowing winds from the Aegean Sea form an almost Mediterranean climate. Due to the diversity of soils, the specific microclimate and the ancient wine traditions that the local people carry in their blood since the time of the Thracians, South Sakar is one of Bulgaria's most terroir and authentic wines.

In order to ensure complete independence, in the fall of 2010 the Bratanov family opened their own winery, where modern technologies are combined with craft approaches. She works skillfully with a variety of oak barrels and experiments boldly, including spontaneous "wild" fermentations.

The strong symbiotic relationship between the land and the vines, between the blends in the blend and between the different generations, gives the name of the first series of Symbiose wines. The “Single Vineyard” series presents wines of local varieties made from the finest grapes from certain plots - so far Tamyanka and Mavrud. In recent years, wines from the South Sakar Selection series - Chardonnay Sur Lie, the red blend from Merlot & Syrah and the Syrah Sans Barrique variety have become emblematic of the winery. In the spring of 2018, the unique, one-of-a-kind Merlot & Cabernet blend by Fran & Rubin - 3-BLEND, was introduced. The highest grade Private Reserve wines are blends of selected barrels with wine maturing in them for a minimum of 24 months. Merlot Private Reserve 2013 was ranked among the top 10 Bulgarian wines for 2016 by DiVino magazine.

The philosophy that the Vratarna Bratanov team is adamant about is that their wines should reflect the experimental spirit of their creators and their origins in South Sakar, leaving them with a sense of authenticity, warmth and characteristic personality.
